Some staff became frustrated and angry when monkeys did not immediately 'comply' during dosing or other tests. For example, if there were problems finding a vein to withdraw blood or the tube would not go down the animal's throat for oral gavage, staff would frequently lose their temper and start swearing and shouting at the macaques.

In some units there was a generally threatening culture of verbal abuse towards the animals, even by some more senior staff who tolerated or even participated in the abuse. On video one female Technical Assistant chants "arsehole, arsehole, arsehole" as she is forcing a tube down one monkey's throat and on another occasion she repeats over and over again, "He's evil, he's evil, he's evil."

This assistant was also filmed venting her anger at a monkey when she was unable to correctly insert the tube down her throat. On another occasion, whilst having problems trying to take blood from a monkey, the same assistant is heard saying: "Can someone hold this fucking animal." As the monkey struggles she lets go of his arm and then points at him shouting "He wanted to bite me!" After the petrified monkey is shaken vigorously and shouted at by the technician ("Are you stupid or what? You goddamn bastard") the female assistant then threatens the monkey with the syringe and says "I will remember that".

On other various occasions, verbal abuse from the staff included outbursts of "Get down or I will smash you in the head"; "Fuck off. Get down"; "You dirty little shit. My god, don't touch me. I hate this".
