Audio
from The Paul Harris Show
Tom
Fenton [3/10/05]: The veteran CBS News foreign correspondent
tells Paul how TV news has declined and become a danger to democracy by
ignoring important stories from overseas. Fenton says network execs
didn't care when he tried to interest them in an interview with Osama Bin
Laden in 1996, nor when he had the inside scoop on the fall of the Shah
of Iran in 1978, at one point saying his pieces had "too many foreign names."
He also argues for a new "patriotic skepticism," discusses the impact of
Fox News Channel, and reflects on the departure of Dan Rather. Listen
to the conversation here. |

www.tenc.net: What the BBC cut from an interview with Jared Israel Posted by masterpaint on Tuesday, February 22 @ 23:29:28 MST (884 reads) Topic Censorship killing free speech
| Anonymous writes "The BBC's Bill Hayton interviewed Jared Israel about the Milosevic 'trial' on 23 August 2002.
We're re-posting that interview both because it's quite interesting and because it clarifies some important matters.
Recently we've published articles about the dispute in the Milosevic support group, ICDSM. [1]
In response, some readers have written, asking: "Why would you want to be in a Milosevic support group in the first place?" Our response: because the facts prove Milosevic and the Serbs are innocent; their accusers are the guilty parties.

www.tenc.net: MORE REUTERS DOUBLE- TALK ON FIREFIGHTERS Posted by masterpaint on Tuesday, February 22 @ 23:17:50 MST (846 reads) Topic Censorship killing free speech
| Anonymous writes "First, by saying most delegates *didn't know* they were voting to boycott a memorial, Schaitberger is admitting that in fact the resolution *involved boycotting a memorial*! Otherwise what would it mean that most delegates weren't informed?
But this contradicts his argument, quoted earlier, that "some" delegates "may have considered the vote to be an endorsement of a boycott of the memorial service" but that this was a mistaken view of the resolution, one which they held due to "gossip and rumors"!

| Anonymous writes "Thanks for the heads-up! Here are a few thoughts.
First, we would *not* justify putting out false information on the grounds that it's anti-Bush or anti-anyone. (Though of course we could make a mistake, etc.)
However, regarding our post of the August 14th Reuters dispatch which asserts that the Firefighters Union voted to boycott the Oct. 6th memorial because Bush planned to attend, we didn't fall for a hoax. Until just an hour ago, you could access the Reuters story at:

If you own a grocery store, and a man comes in from a painter's truck in overalls to buy groceries, you don't try to sell him a one-ounce jar of Russian caviar at two bucks a throw. You offer him beef, potatoes, and bread. If a French diplomat comes in, you don't offer him hawg jowl; you might try the caviar. It is the same with propaganda. If you wish to win the "trade" of all potential "customers," as we must do if we are to survive, you must have in stock a complete line of goods, especially the kind of goods most desired by the majority of your potential customers -- and that means bread, potatoes, and beef, not caviar and truffles. In 1995, a young woman on a CBS television show pulled back her gown and exposed both of her breasts, completely. The show was "Chicago Hope," a medical drama, and the actress was playing a patient recovering from post-cancer breast reconstruction surgery. Even though it aired in prime time, CBS received not a peep of protest.
For a Super Bowl halftime show that revealed a lot less, CBS is now facing a federal government inquiry and continuing public outcry.

well known alternative news publication YellowTimes.org was just shut down by its hosting comapny! It recently published an article by an Iraqi nuclear scientist! Stifling the Voice of Reason By Firas Al-Atraqchi The campaign to stifle dissent and censor any questioning of current U.S. policies vis a vis the Middle East in general, and Iraq in particular, has reached new levels. Websites which host alternative views, and/or views that contradict U.S. foreign policy are no longer tolerated on the Internet and are systematically coming under hacker attack and political pressures to "relocate."

Why did this happen? Why only a couple of months after my company picked up the option on my contract for another year in the fifth-largest city in the United States, did it suddenly decide to relegate me to radio Outer Darkness? The answer lies hidden in the oil-and-water incompatibility of these two seemingly disconnected phrases: “Criticizing Bush” and “Clear Channel.” "

Al-Jazeera's coverage of the Iraqi war has angered coalition leaders, but they can't force it off air.For three years, the al-Jazeera reporter Ammar Al-Sankari had been welcome at the New York stock exchange, but not any more. Last week, upon arriving to do his daily business report for the Arabic satellite news service, he was asked to hand over his press badge.

When Telling The Truth Will Get You Fired From The Networks. When NBC -- which is owned by General Electric, a prime military-industrial complex contractor -- decided to fire Peter Arnett for the thought crime of plain speaking, it was undoubtedly responding both to pressure from the White House (which accused Arnett of "pandering" to the Iraqis) and to the imperatives of its MSNBC ratings chase against the gung-ho, pro-war frothers of Fox News.

LONDON (Reuters) - Banned on Wall Street and wiped off the Internet, Arab news channel al-Jazeera defended its controversial coverage of the Iraq war on Wednesday and demanded the United States come to its aid in the name of a free press.
Al-Jazeera, which angered Washington by showing footage of dead and captured American soldiers, voiced concern after two of its reporters were banned from the New York Stock Exchange and its Web sites were hacked.
The stock exchange stopped al-Jazeera broadcasts, saying credentials were only for networks that provided "responsible" coverage. Al-Jazeera was also denied a request to broadcast live from New York's Nasdaq exchange.

Israel has ranked poorly in a press-freedoms index created by advocacy group Reporters Without Borders, ranking below the Palestinian National Authority, Zambia and Cambodia. Last year, the Committee to Protect Journalists condemned what it called "attempts by the (Israel Defense Forces) to intimidate the press from covering the IDF's widening military campaign in the territories."

Censorship: Report: Bush Administration killed this movie (Equilibrium) Posted by TeamPaint on Sunday, January 11 @ 18:57:31 MST (752 reads) Topic Censorship killing free speech

I'll start off by saying I live in LA and work in the biz. Not a big Hollywood player or anything, just crew. After seeing the trailer for this film, I thought it certainly had Blockbuster written all over it. Then I found out it's released in only 300 theaters and then it's gone in 3 weeks.
So I start talking to fellow employees about this, and not really having any answers they start asking around too. Well, finally word comes back to me that originally, this movie was scheduled for a Spring or Summer release in 2,000 theaters! Which is the norm (more or less) for a blockbuster flick. I beleive ones like Godzilla pushed for 4,000. The reason it didn't, was because of its "anti-government" content. Apparently, a publicist in the Bush administration thought this movie might plant the seed of "anti-government" feelings in the public's mind if it had a wide commercial release, which would not sit well for them in trying to gain support for war.
